Getting Around

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

There will be no general spectator parking available at the stadium.

The shuttle services can be accessed from or near the Civic Centre bus station in Hertzog Boulevard in the City Centre, and from Cape Town Rail Station. The Golden Acre bus terminus, main minibus taxi rank, metered-taxi ranks, long-distance bus terminal, FIFA Fan Fest™ and the Fan Walk to Cape Town Stadium are also close by.

RAIL

Cape Metrorail, a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, forms the backbone of the transport system, serving 119 rail stations. Train tickets may be purchased from the ticket offices at all stations prior to the journey and will be checked at the beginning and end of each journey. Monthly, weekly or daily return tickets may be purchased and must be valid for each journey taken.

2010 Event rail services will operate from 4 June to 16 July. Normal services will be supplemented with additional trains operating until 02:00. Detailed train timetables will be available from the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63 or www.capemetrorail.co.za. On Monday 21 June additional trains will transport spectators to the City Centre for the 13:30 match. A match ticket provides free rail transport into the City Centre before kick-off and on the return trip after the match. This is only applicable to match ticket holders on the day of that match.

World Cup Rail Stations

Twenty Six rail stations have been selected as special stations for the World Cup. Located conveniently close to accommodation and covering the entire metropolitan area, these stations will be clearly signposted. They will also have event information, branding to make them easily identifiable and additional security to match the extended rail service times. Park-and-ride facilities, as detailed below, have been developed at ten of these stations. The Stadium, Match Day shuttle, FIFA Fan Fest^TM and the Fan Walk are all easily accessible from Cape Town Rail Station in the City Cente. Although not serving as Park-and-ride facilities, Eersterivier, Heideveld, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Langa, Lansdowne, Monte Vista, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Philippi and Plumstead stations are also branded and have additional security. The remaining four stations serve the Public Viewing Areas in Bellville, Athlone, Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

BUS SERVICES

Existing Regular Services

Golden Arrow Bus Services provides bus transport within the metropolitan area. Information on schedules, fares and ticket offices is available from 0800 65 64 63. Tickets for single trips can be bought upon boarding the bus with cash in local currency. Please ensure you have small change as the driver might not always be able to assist.

If you plan multiple bus journeys a weekly ticket or “clip card” may be purchased at the ticket offices at a discounted fare. Assistants with bright colour bibs will be able to assist you at the terminus as to what bus will be departing to your area.

Additional Bus Services Operating for the Duration of the Event

An airport-to-city service will run between the newly completed Airport and the Civic Centre bus stations via the N2 and Eastern Boulevard. This service will operate between 20 and 24 hours a day at a cost of R50,00 one way. It will depart every six to 30 minutes, depending on demand.

The Inner-City bus service will provide convenient transport to hotels, accommodation nodes, restaurants, entertainment areas, parking areas, and places of interest. Each journey will cost R8,00 and buses will depart every 10 to 30 minutes and operate between 20 and 24 hours a day.

The Queens Beach bus service, travels between the Civic Centre bus station and Queens Beach in Sea Point via the Waterfront and will operate until 02:00. The cost of the journey will be based on the distance travelled, and services will operate at regular intervals.

Match Days Only Services

A free shuttle bus service for match ticket holders will run between the Civic Centre bus station and Cape Town Stadium in Green Point. This return service will operate from six hours before kick-off, until four hours after the final whistle. Buses will depart as often as every three minutes depending on demand. A free bus service will also operate from the park-and-ride facility on the University of Cape Town’s Upper Campus in Rondebosch to the Civic Centre bus station. The hours of operation will be from four hours before kick-off until four after final whistle.

The Hout Bay service will run from Hout Bay to the Civic Centre bus station, along the Atlantic Seaboard via Camps Bay, Sea Point and Cape Town Stadium. It will operate from four hours before kick-off, until 02:00. A fare based service, the cost of the journey will be based on the distance travelled, as with the regular service, and buses will depart at regular intervals.

On match days Golden Arrow will provide an extended service from the Golden Acre bus terminus.

Topless Tours

This service visits the major attractions around the city and is a convenient way to experience Cape Town’s many varied attractions. The bright red “Hop-on Hop-off” city sightseeing service comes complete with 9 multilingual commentary channels, plus a “kiddie’s” channel and is an ideal and convenient method of travelling to and viewing the most popular attractions in and around Cape Town.

Bus Charters

Should a tourist group want to visit any area that is not on a normal bus route, a bus or coach may be chartered to drive the group to and from the destination. This should be planned well in advance and information is available from www.satsa.com.

PARK-AND-RIDE

There will be no general spectator parking available at the stadium or its immediate surrounds, and parking in the city centre is also severely limited. All spectators are advised and, indeed, encouraged to use the identified park-and-ride facilities outside the city centre. Ten rail and three bus park-and-ride facilities will operate during the world cup. These venues will be clearly signposted and will have dedicated security measures in place, as well as volunteers ready to assist with any queries.

Park-and-Ride - Rail

Parking for transfer to rail is available at:

- Fish Hoek – beach parking

- Ottery – parking at Youth Care Centre, opposite church

- Retreat – parking at station

- Claremont – on Palmyra Road, east of the station

- Goodwood – parking at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World

- Century City – parking at Ratanga Junction with a shuttle service to the station

- Oosterzee – parking at Settlers High School

- Brackenfell – parking at station

- Kuilsrivier – parking at station

- Strand – parking at municipal building opposite the station

Park-and-Ride - Bus

Park-and ride facilities are available at:

- Kronendal Primary School sports field off Andrews Road in Hout Bay

- Camps Bay High School sports field in Maiden’s Cove off Victoria Road

- University of Cape Town’s Upper Campus in Rondebosch to the Civic Centre bus station.

Operating Hours and Cost

Daily services will be provided at park-and-ride rail stations for the duration of the 2010 event and security will be in place until after the last train has departed. The three bus-based park-and-rides will operate on match days only, from six hours before kick-off, until about four hours after the final whistle.

Parking in regular parking areas around rail stations will generally be free of charge. Temporary parking areas, however, will mostly be situated on private land, where a nominal charge may apply.

MINIBUS AND METERED TAXIS

Minibus taxis serve most areas on dedicated routes. The service, although unscheduled, runs frequently and conveniently with numerous pick-up and drop-off points along its routes. Some local knowledge is typically required to flag down the right vehicle for the desired destination. Payment with cash in local currency is upon boarding.

Metered taxis supplement the public transport network. Services operate from the airport, city centre and key nodes in accommodation areas. Taxis can be distinguished by a roof light or sign denoting “TAXI”. Fares have to be openly displayed on the vehicle and calculated per metered kilometre. Some of these are also able to accommodate wheelchairs. Check at the airport help desk or with your accommodation to arrange a metered taxi.

TRANSPORT TO PUBLIC VIEWING AREAS (PVAs)

The PVAs are well served by regular minibus public transport services that operate from ranks at the nearby rail stations and public transport interchanges. The cost of the journey will depend on the distance travelled.

Bellville Velodrome off Durban Road is linked to Bellville Station via minibus taxi services.
The Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone, off Klipfontein Road is accessible via Athlone Station.
OR Tambo Sports Hall in Khayelitsha is located on Lansdowne Road, and within 500m of Nonkqubela Station.
Swartklip Sports Hall in Mitchells Plain is located on the corner of Spine Road and Mew Way, and within walking distance of Mitchells Plain Station and Town Centre.

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Buses on the shuttle routes from the airport and to the stadium will be wheelchair friendly, as will be the Civic Centre bus station and the Match Day shuttle.

A special needs transport hub at the Civic Centre, between the Civic Centre bus station and Cape Town Rail Station, will operate on all match days. This park-and-ride service to and from the stadium will be exclusively for people with disabilities, will only operate on match days and will be free of charge.

Wheelchair users with a wheelchair match ticket, as issued through the FIFA ticketing office or those in possession of a doctor’s certificate confirming their immobility, are requested to book a place on this shuttle. Some private taxi operators will also be able to transport wheelchair users to areas not covered by the shuttles but not to the stadium.

NON-MOTORISED TRANSPORT

The Fan Walk route, covering a distance of 2,5 km, runs from Cape Town Rail Station on Adderley Street, and the Grand Parade, along Waterkant Street, across the new pedestrian bridge at Buitengragt, along Somerset Road, to the stadium. The FIFA Fan Fest™, at the Grand Parade, is located approximately 100m from Cape Town Rail Station off Strand Street.

Certain dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes along Somerset Road link the city centre to the stadium precinct. Various private dealerships will offer bicycles for rent, with lockup facilities provided around the stadium. However, cycling along the fan walk on match days is not advised during the peak period between four hours before kick-off, and two hours after the final whistle, due to the large volumes of pedestrians expected.
