The Diski Dance
The Diski Dance
The Diski Dance was initially created for an international TV advert spearheaded by SA Tourism regarding South Africa’s readiness to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The dance has made international news with the advertisement being aired in most major key source markets on CNN International, BBC World News, National Geographic, Eurosport and Sky News Sport; and has become the official dance of the soccer tournament as the country embraces the ‘diski’ movement.
‘Diski’ is a South African ‘slang’ word for football and the Diski Dance is modelled on five key African football moves:
- The Juggle or Teka (juggling the ball from left to right),
- The Header (bouncing the ball on the head),
- Table Mountain (flattening the back to keep the ball behind the head),
- Trepa (a word used to describe flicking the ball from behind the neck, over the head and onto the foot), and
- The Bridge or Brija (passing the ball over the left foot with the right foot and back again).
The Diski Dance represents the country's sense of fun and diversity and is a must at Freaky Friday events around the country where groups of young dancers are deployed to teach citizens Diski Dance moves in public spaces.
The dance is also being promoted on local television stations, through commercial media, as well as online.
